There are several assumptions in your vocabulary. You and I know what you mean, but do students who are learning understand? You started with an expression at the beginning... but at the end you talked about solving a quadratic equation. I never saw a quadratic equation... nor did I hear one mentioned at the beginning. Why did you set each of the factors equal to zero and solve those equations?
Are your students memorizing algorithms? Or are they learning what's really happening within those algorithms?
